Stroke rehabilitation
stroke rehabilitation · stroke rehab · stroke recovery therapy · speech therapy after stroke
Doctors, physical therapists, a speech therapist, and an occupational therapist help bring back movement, speech, and everyday skills.
After a stroke, as early as your doctor allows. Most recovery happens in the first months.
⏱ Duration: sessions usually last 30 to 60 minutes; the course takes weeks to months, and continues at home

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Clothes. Comfortable sportswear and steady, closed shoes.
- Medicines. Take your medicines as usual. Do not stop them on your own. Tell your doctor, and they will decide.
- Helper. It is good if someone close comes to sessions. They will learn how to help at home.
- Goals. Think about what matters most to get back: walking, your hand, speech, self-care.
What to bring
- Your hospital discharge papers
- A list of your medicines
- Comfortable clothes and shoes
- Glasses or a hearing aid, if you use them
- A cane or walker, if you have one
How it goes
- The doctor examines you and sets goals together with you
- Blood pressure and pulse are checked before the session
- A physical therapist works on strength, balance, and walking
- An occupational therapist trains daily skills: dressing, eating, washing
- A speech therapist works on speech and swallowing, if needed
- You get exercises for home
What you'll feel
- Tiredness after sessions is normal
- Progress may be slow, but it shows over time
- Sometimes it is emotionally hard. Tell your doctor. Help is available
Afterwards
- Daily home exercises matter as much as the sessions
- At home, remove rugs and cords you could trip on
- Watch your blood pressure and take medicines as prescribed
- Progress is checked regularly, and the program is adjusted
Contact a doctor straight away if
- New weakness in an arm or leg, a drooping face, or trouble speaking: call emergency services
- A sudden severe headache or loss of consciousness: call emergency services
- A fall with a blow to the head
