Sports medical clearance
sports physical · sports medical certificate · pre-participation physical · sports clearance
A doctor checks whether you or your child can do sports, and at what level. At the end, you get a clearance certificate.
Before joining a club, before competitions or fitness tests, or when a coach asks for it.
⏱ Duration: usually 30 minutes to a few hours, if several doctors are needed; the certificate is often given the same day

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Checklist. Ask the clinic or coach which doctors and tests are needed for your sport.
- The day before. No hard workout the day before. It can affect the ECG and blood pressure.
- Clothes. Comfortable sportswear and shoes, if there will be an exercise test.
What to bring
- Your ID
- Vaccination record or your child's medical record
- Past certificates and reports
- Club or federation requirements, if any
How it goes
- The doctor asks about your health and training
- Height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse are measured
- An ECG is done
- Sometimes blood tests, an exercise test, or other doctors' checks
- The doctor listens to your heart and lungs, and checks posture and joints
- You get a clearance certificate, or are sent for more tests
What you'll feel
- The exam is painless
- An exercise test is like a normal workout. You may get tired
Afterwards
- Give the certificate to the coach or club
- The certificate is valid for a limited time. Check how long
- If something is found, the doctor will say what activity is OK for now
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath during training: stop and call emergency services
