Fatty liver: follow-up with a liver specialist

fatty liver · fatty liver disease · hepatic steatosis · liver steatosis

This is when extra fat builds up in the liver. The doctor keeps watch so the liver is not damaged and helps you turn it around.

If ultrasound showed fat in the liver, liver tests are raised, or you have extra weight, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

⏱ Duration: a visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and follow-up lasts months to years

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Tests. The doctor may ask for liver tests, sugar, and cholesterol. Usually on an empty stomach.
  • Exams. Bring your previous liver ultrasounds and tests, so the doctor can see how things change.
  • Diary. You can write down what you eat in a normal week.

What to bring

  • An ID
  • Ultrasound and test results
  • A list of medicines and supplements

How it goes

  1. The doctor asks about diet, alcohol, and illnesses
  2. Measures weight and waist
  3. Feels your belly
  4. Looks at your tests and ultrasound
  5. Sometimes sends you for a liver stiffness scan
  6. Makes a plan for diet, activity, and follow-up

What you'll feel

  • The visit does not hurt
  • Having the belly felt may be a little unpleasant

Afterwards

  • The main treatment is gradual weight loss and activity
  • Your doctor will usually advise limiting or cutting out alcohol
  • Tests and ultrasound follow-ups are on the schedule your doctor sets

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Yellow skin or eyes, vomiting blood, or black stools: call emergency services
  • Severe pain in the right side or a swelling belly: see a doctor urgently
