How to prepare

  • List of doctors. Ask the clinic in advance which doctors and tests you need. It depends on the type of certificate and the country.
  • Referral. For work, you usually need a referral from your employer.
  • The day before. Get a good night's sleep. No alcohol for 2 to 3 days. If you need blood tests, ask whether to come fasting.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • A referral from your employer, if it is for work
  • Your glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them
  • A photo, if the clinic asks for one
  • Your old certificate or health record, if you have one

How it goes

  1. You check in and get a list of rooms to visit
  2. You usually see a general doctor and an eye doctor
  3. For a driving certificate, also a psychiatrist and an addiction specialist. Sometimes an alcohol and drug test is needed
  4. For some license categories and jobs, also an EEG, an ear, nose, and throat doctor, a neurologist, and others
  5. Sometimes you have tests, an ECG, or a chest X-ray
  6. At the end, you get a certificate or a report

What you'll feel

  • Nothing unpleasant. Just normal checkups and questions

Afterwards

  • The certificate is often given the same day, if no test results are pending
  • If a doctor is unsure, they may send you for more tests
  • Check your full name, the date, and the stamps on the certificate
