Osteoporosis checkup and treatment

osteoporosis · brittle bones · bone density check · bone density scan and treatment

The doctor checks how strong your bones are and, if needed, prescribes treatment to lower the risk of fractures.

For women after menopause, people over 65, after a fracture from a minor injury, and with long-term use of steroids.

⏱ Duration: the visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, the bone density scan about 10 to 20 minutes, with the result usually the same day

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Bone density scan. Before the bone density scan you usually do not take calcium for a day. Ask the clinic.
  • Clothing. No metal fasteners, buckles or zippers.
  • Documents. Bring earlier scans and bone density tests - they are compared.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • Results of earlier bone density tests
  • A list of your medicines and supplements
  • Blood test results, if you had them

How it goes

  1. The doctor asks about fractures, illnesses and medicines
  2. Measures your height and weight
  3. Sends you for a bone density scan - a special quick X-ray of the bones
  4. May order blood tests
  5. Explains the result and the risk of fractures
  6. Prescribes treatment and advice on food and movement

What you'll feel

  • The bone density scan is painless, you just lie still
  • The radiation dose is very small

Afterwards

  • Treatment is usually long - several years
  • Do not stop medicines on your own
  • A repeat bone density scan is usually done after 1 to 2 years
  • It is important to protect yourself from falls at home

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Sudden back pain after a small effort or fall - see a doctor
  • Severe hip pain and you cannot get up after a fall - call your local emergency number
