Baby head ultrasound
neurosonography · baby head ultrasound · infant brain ultrasound · ultrasound through the soft spot
The doctor uses ultrasound to look at your baby's brain through the soft spot on the head. It is safe and does not hurt.
Often as a routine check in the first months. Also for babies born early, after a difficult birth, or if the doctor is worried about something.
⏱ Duration: usually 5 to 15 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Age. It is done while the soft spot is still open, usually until age 1. It shows best in the first months.
- Feeding. It helps to feed your baby shortly before the scan. A full baby is calmer and often falls asleep.
- Special preparation. None is needed. You do not need to wash your baby's hair beforehand.
What to bring
- Your referral
- A baby blanket or changing sheet
- A diaper and wet wipes
- A bottle or pacifier
- Past reports, if you have them
How it goes
- Your baby is laid on a blanket on the exam table. The hair does not need to be moved aside
- Mom or dad stays close, holds the baby, and soothes them
- A little gel is put on the soft spot
- The doctor gently places the probe and changes its angle
- Sometimes other soft spots or the temple are used too
What you'll feel
- It does not hurt your baby. The probe barely presses
- Your baby may fuss because of the cool gel or being held
Afterwards
- The gel is wiped off with a tissue
- You can feed your baby and go out right away
- You usually get the report right away. Your pediatrician or neurologist will review it
Common questions
Is a head ultrasound harmful for a baby?
No. It is ultrasound with no radiation, and it can be repeated as often as needed.
Why does my 1-month-old need a head ultrasound?
It is a common routine check. While the soft spot is open, the brain is easy to see, and the doctor can spot changes in time.
