3D/4D ultrasound in pregnancy
3D ultrasound · 4D ultrasound · 3D baby scan · baby face ultrasound
It is a normal pregnancy ultrasound, but the image is three-dimensional. In 4D, you can see your baby move in real time.
Most often because parents want it. Sometimes the doctor uses 3D to see certain organs of the baby better.
⏱ Duration: usually 20 to 40 minutes; photos and videos are given right away

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Timing. The baby's face is usually best seen between 24 and 32 weeks. Check with the clinic.
- Food. No special preparation. You can have a snack. Sometimes the baby is more active after it.
- Clothing. Comfortable clothes that make it easy to uncover your belly.
What to bring
- Your pregnancy record card
- A USB drive or phone for recordings. Ask the clinic
- Your ID
How it goes
- You lie on the exam table and uncover your belly
- The doctor puts on gel
- First the baby is checked in normal mode
- Then the doctor turns on 3D mode and looks for a good angle
- If the baby has turned away, you are asked to turn on your side or walk a bit
- The gel is wiped off, and you get the pictures
What you'll feel
- It does not hurt. The probe just moves over your belly
- The gel is cool
- Sometimes lying on your back makes you dizzy. Turn onto your side
Afterwards
- You can go back to your usual day right away
- Sometimes the baby just will not turn. Then you may be offered another visit
- A 3D ultrasound does not replace your planned screenings
Common questions
Is it harmful for the baby?
Ultrasound is considered safe in pregnancy. But it is better to do it when there is a reason, and not too often.
Why can't the face be seen?
The baby may be facing your back or covering the face with hands or the cord. Sometimes a short walk and another try help.
