General doctor visit
GP appointment · family doctor · primary care doctor · general practitioner
The first doctor to see. They ask questions, examine you, prescribe treatment, or refer you to a specialist.
When something bothers you and you are not sure which doctor to see. Also for checkups, medical certificates, and long-term illnesses.
⏱ Duration: usually 15 to 30 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Your concerns. Write down what bothers you and what you want to ask. It is easy to forget during the visit.
- Blood pressure. If you check your blood pressure or blood sugar at home, bring your records.
- Clothes. Wear something comfortable, so your chest and arm are easy to uncover for a blood pressure check.
What to bring
- Your ID
- Past test results, medical records, and reports
- A list of your medicines or the packs themselves
How it goes
- The doctor asks about your concerns and your health
- They check your blood pressure and pulse, and sometimes your temperature and weight
- They listen to your heart and lungs
- They look at your throat and feel your belly
- They explain what comes next: treatment, tests, or another doctor
What you'll feel
- Nothing unpleasant. It is a normal checkup
Afterwards
- The doctor gives you prescriptions and referrals
- If something is unclear, ask while you are still in the room
- Do not change your treatment on your own. If you have questions, ask your doctor
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, a drooping face, weakness in an arm or leg, or a sudden severe headache: do not wait for the visit. Call emergency services
