Night guard for teeth grinding

night guard · occlusal splint · bruxism guard · mouth guard for grinding

This is a thin, clear cover for your teeth that you wear at night. It protects your teeth from wear when you clench or grind in your sleep.

When you grind or clench your teeth, your teeth are wearing down, or your jaw or head hurts in the morning.

⏱ Duration: taking impressions usually takes 15 to 20 minutes; the guard is usually ready in a few days

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Teeth. Brush your teeth before the visit.
  • Questions. Write down what bothers you: pain, noises, worn teeth.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • Your old guard, if you have one

How it goes

  1. The doctor checks your teeth and jaw
  2. Impressions or a scan of your teeth are taken
  3. The guard is made in a lab to fit your teeth
  4. At the next visit, you try it on
  5. The doctor adjusts it so it does not press
  6. You are shown how to put it in, take it out, and clean it

What you'll feel

  • The impression material may make you gag. Breathe through your nose
  • The first few nights, the guard feels strange
  • You may have more saliva. This passes in a few days

Afterwards

  • Wear the guard every night
  • In the morning, rinse it in cool water and brush it
  • Keep it in its case, not in hot water
  • See your dentist for checks as advised

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • The guard presses, or your teeth or jaw hurt more than before: book a visit with your dentist

Common questions

Will the guard cure grinding?

It protects your teeth, but does not remove the cause. Your doctor may suggest other steps too.

Can I buy a ready-made guard at the pharmacy?

Ready-made guards exist, but a custom one fits better. Ask your dentist.

How long does a guard last?

Usually a year or more. If it cracks or stops fitting well, you need a new one.
