Memory check (dementia screening)

dementia test · memory check for older people · cognitive test · memory exam · forgetfulness

The doctor asks questions and gives simple tasks for memory, attention and thinking. This helps notice memory problems early.

When you or your family notice forgetfulness, confusion or trouble with everyday tasks.

⏱ Duration: the test usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, the visit about an hour

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Close person. It is good if a close person comes - they can tell what they have noticed.
  • Sleep. Get a good night's sleep and eat before the visit.
  • Glasses. Bring your glasses and hearing aid - without them the test will not be accurate.

What to bring

  • A list of your medicines
  • Glasses and a hearing aid
  • Discharge summaries and tests, if you have them

How it goes

  1. The doctor asks you and your close person questions
  2. Gives tasks: remember words, say the date, draw a clock
  3. Checks attention, counting and speech
  4. Explains the result
  5. If needed, orders blood tests and an MRI
  6. Agrees on the next visit

What you'll feel

  • The test is painless
  • You may feel nervous or awkward if something does not work out - this is normal

Afterwards

  • If the test shows changes, the doctor will order further tests
  • Some causes can be treated: lack of vitamins, thyroid problems, depression
  • The test is usually repeated after some time

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Sudden confusion, weakness in an arm or leg, or trouble speaking - call your local emergency number

Common questions

Does the test give a diagnosis right away?

No. The test is only the first step. An exam and further tests are needed for conclusions.

Can I prepare for the test?

You do not need to prepare. Just sleep well and bring your glasses.
