Full health checkup

checkup · health screening · annual physical · full body checkup

A set of tests, scans, and doctor visits in one or a few visits. It helps find problems before they cause symptoms.

For prevention, usually once a year. The program is chosen by your age, sex, and family history.

⏱ Duration: usually 2 to 4 hours, sometimes over several days

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Fasting. Usually no food for 8 to 12 hours before blood tests. Plain still water is fine.
  • The day before. Eat a light dinner. No alcohol for 1 to 2 days. No hard workouts or sauna.
  • Medicines. Do not stop them on your own. Ask the clinic whether to take your morning medicines before or after the blood test.
  • Urine test. Collect your first morning urine in a sterile container from the pharmacy.
  • For women. If you will have swabs taken, it is best not during your period. Check with the clinic.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • The container with your morning urine
  • Past test results and reports
  • A list of your medicines
  • A snack and water, to eat after the blood test

How it goes

  1. In the morning, before eating, your blood is taken
  2. Then tests that need an empty stomach, like a belly ultrasound
  3. After that, you can have a snack
  4. Next, an ECG and other tests in your program
  5. Visits with doctors
  6. At the end, a doctor goes over the results and gives advice

What you'll feel

  • A quick prick for the blood test
  • Nothing else is usually unpleasant, but the day can be tiring

Afterwards

  • Some results are ready the same day, others in a few days
  • If something is found, your doctor will tell you what to do next
  • Keep your results. They are useful for comparing next year

Common questions

How often should I have a checkup?

Usually once a year. If you have a long-term illness, your doctor may set a different schedule.

Can I drink water before the tests?

Yes, plain still water is fine. No tea, coffee, juice, or chewing gum.

Why have a checkup if nothing hurts?

Many diseases have no signs for a long time: high blood pressure, high sugar, high cholesterol. A checkup finds them early, when treatment is easier.
