Spine X-ray for scoliosis
scoliosis X-ray · standing spine X-ray · full spine X-ray · EOS spine imaging
An X-ray of the spine while standing, often full length. From it, the doctor measures the angle of the curve.
For uneven posture, shoulders or shoulder blades at different heights, possible scoliosis, or to check treatment.
⏱ Duration: usually 10 to 15 minutes in the room; the report the same or the next day

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Prep. None needed. You can eat and drink.
- Clothing. Take off anything with metal: clasps, zippers, an underwire bra, necklaces. Sometimes a disposable gown is given.
What to bring
- Your referral
- Past spine X-rays. Without them, it is hard to compare the angle
How it goes
- You undress down to your underwear
- You stand with your back or side to the machine, feet level
- Your arms rest at your sides or on a support
- Stand straight and hold your breath for a couple of seconds
- Sometimes images are taken while bending to the sides
What you'll feel
- It does not hurt
- You just need to stand straight. It is easy
Afterwards
- You can go about your day right away
- Take the report with the curve angle to an orthopedic or spine specialist
Common questions
How often can a scoliosis X-ray be done?
As often as your doctor orders. Usually no more than once every 6 to 12 months, unless there is a special reason.
Why is a child imaged standing, not lying down?
Lying down, the curve gets smaller. Standing shows the true angle.
