Wound cleaning and stitches

wound stitches · getting stitches · wound cleaning · sutures for a cut

The doctor cleans the wound, removes dirt and damaged tissue, and stitches it if needed, under local anesthesia.

For cuts, torn wounds, puncture wounds, or bites, if the wound is deep, wide, keeps bleeding, or is dirty.

⏱ Duration: usually 15 to 40 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Stop the bleeding. Press the wound with a clean cloth or bandage and hold it for 10 to 15 minutes without letting go.
  • Do not. Do not pour powders into the wound, and do not put ointment or antiseptic dye inside it. Do not pull out an object stuck in the wound.
  • Do not delay. It is best to see a doctor within the first few hours. Then the wound can usually be stitched right away.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • Your vaccination records, if you have them

How it goes

  1. The doctor checks the wound, and how you can move and feel
  2. Numbing shots are given around the wound
  3. The wound is rinsed and cleaned
  4. If needed, damaged edges are trimmed
  5. Stitches, skin tape strips, or medical glue are used to close it
  6. A bandage is put on top
  7. If needed, you get tetanus protection. After a bite, you are referred for a rabies vaccine

What you'll feel

  • The numbing shots sting for a few seconds, then the area goes numb
  • During stitching, you feel touch and pulling, but no sharp pain
  • When the numbing wears off, the wound will ache. Regular pain medicine helps

Afterwards

  • Change the bandage and get the wound wet only as your doctor said
  • Stitches are usually removed after 5 to 14 days: sooner on the face, later over joints
  • Come for wound checks and dressing changes on the set days
  • A small scar will remain. It fades over time

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes of pressure: call emergency services
  • Spreading redness around the wound, pus, growing pain, or a fever are signs of infection
  • Numbness, or a finger below the wound will not move
  • A wound from an animal bite: see a doctor the same day
