Occupational health check
pre-employment medical · occupational health check · work medical exam · periodic medical exam · health certificate for work
Doctors check that your health suits the job. The doctors and tests depend on your profession.
Before starting a job, and then regularly if the work involves hazards, food, children, or transport.
⏱ Duration: usually from 1 to 2 hours up to 1 to 2 days if tests are needed; the final report comes after all doctors

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Referral. Bring the referral from your employer. It lists your job and workplace hazards.
- Tests. If a fasting blood test is needed, come in the morning without breakfast. Check with the clinic.
- Time. Allow extra time. There may be many rooms to visit.
What to bring
- The referral from your employer
- Your ID
- Your health record book, if your job needs one
- Results of past checks and chest X-rays
How it goes
- At the front desk, the referral is checked, and you get a route
- You give samples for tests and have the needed scans
- You see the doctors on the list
- Each doctor signs off
- The panel chair issues the final report
What you'll feel
- Usually nothing unpleasant, except the needle for a blood test
- There may be queues
Afterwards
- Give the report to your employer
- If something is found, more tests will be ordered
- The next check follows your employer's schedule
Common questions
Who pays for the medical?
Usually the employer. Check with them in advance.
Can I be found unfit for work?
Yes, if a condition gets in the way of that job. More often you are given time for treatment or tests.
