Videonystagmography (VNG)

videonystagmography · VNG test · balance test · dizziness test · vestibular testing

The doctor records your eye movements with special goggles that have cameras. Your eyes show how the balance organ in your inner ear works.

For dizziness, unsteady walking, ringing in the ears, or after a head injury, to find the cause.

⏱ Duration: usually 30 to 60 minutes; the report is often ready the same day

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Medicines. Some medicines interfere with the test. Do not stop them on your own. Tell your doctor. They will decide what can be skipped and for how many days.
  • Food and alcohol. No alcohol for 1 to 2 days before. You are usually asked not to eat a big meal for 2 to 3 hours before, because you may feel sick.
  • Face. Come without eye makeup. Mascara gets in the way of the camera.
  • Getting home. You may feel a little dizzy after the test. Better not to drive right away. Bring someone with you.

What to bring

  • Your referral
  • Past ENT and neurologist reports
  • A list of your medicines

How it goes

  1. You sit in a chair, and goggles with cameras are put on
  2. First, you follow a dot on a screen with your eyes
  3. Then your head and body positions are changed: lying down, on your side, with turns
  4. Sometimes warm and cool air or water is put in each ear. This tests each ear separately
  5. The doctor watches your eye movements on a monitor

What you'll feel

  • It does not hurt
  • During some tests you feel dizzy and may feel sick. This is expected and passes quickly
  • Tell the doctor if you feel very unwell. They will take a break

Afterwards

  • Sit for 10 to 15 minutes until the dizziness passes
  • You can go on with your normal day
  • The report is often ready right away, sometimes in 1 to 2 days

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • A severe headache, double vision, weakness in an arm or leg, or trouble speaking: call emergency services right away

Common questions

Why do I get dizzy during the test?

Some tests cause brief dizziness on purpose. This shows the doctor how the balance organ responds.

Can I take dizziness pills before the VNG?

They can change the result. Tell your doctor in advance. They will decide if you need a break.
