Thyroid ultrasound
thyroid ultrasound · thyroid scan · neck ultrasound
The doctor looks at the thyroid gland in your neck with ultrasound: its size, structure, and any lumps, called nodules.
For abnormal hormone levels, a lump you can feel, a swollen neck, or a routine checkup.
⏱ Duration: usually 10 to 15 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Preparation. None needed. Eat and drink as usual.
- Clothes. No high collar. It is best to take off any neck chain.
What to bring
- Your referral
- Past ultrasounds and thyroid hormone tests, if you have them
How it goes
- You lie on your back with a roll under your shoulders, so your head tilts back a little
- Gel is put on your neck
- The probe moves over the front of your neck
- Sometimes you are asked to swallow
What you'll feel
- Cool gel and light pressure from the probe
Afterwards
- The report is usually given right away
- If a nodule is found, the doctor may suggest a needle biopsy. That is a separate procedure
Common questions
Is a thyroid nodule dangerous?
Most nodules are harmless. The doctor checks them on ultrasound and orders a needle biopsy if needed.
