Pelvic ultrasound

pelvic ultrasound · gynecological ultrasound · uterus and ovaries ultrasound · transvaginal ultrasound

The doctor looks at your uterus and ovaries with ultrasound. The probe is placed on your belly or put into the vagina. It is safe and uses no radiation.

For pain in the lower belly, period problems, planning a pregnancy, or a routine checkup.

⏱ Duration: usually 15 to 20 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Cycle day. Usually on day 5 to 7 of your cycle, unless the doctor gives another day. Sometimes you need to come in the second half of the cycle.
  • Through the belly. You need a full bladder. Usually drink 1 liter of water an hour before and do not go to the toilet.
  • Through the vagina. Here you empty your bladder before the scan instead. Check with your clinic which way you will have.
  • Hygiene. A normal shower. You can bring a pad with you.

What to bring

  • Your referral
  • Past ultrasound reports
  • A sheet and tissues, if the clinic does not provide them

How it goes

  1. You undress below the waist and lie on the couch
  2. Through the belly: gel is put on your lower belly and the probe is moved over it
  3. Through the vagina: a disposable cover with gel is put on a thin probe, and it is gently inserted
  4. The doctor looks at the uterus and ovaries from different angles

What you'll feel

  • Through the belly: pressure on your full bladder. It can be uncomfortable
  • Through the vagina: usually not painful, much like a gynecology exam
  • If it is unpleasant, tell the doctor

Afterwards

  • You can go back to your day straight away
  • You may have a little discharge from the gel
  • You usually get the report right away

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Severe lower belly pain, heavy bleeding, weakness, or fainting: do not wait for your appointment. Call emergency services

Common questions

On which day of my cycle should I have a pelvic ultrasound?

Usually on day 5 to 7. But if the doctor is looking for something specific, they may choose another day.

Can I have an ultrasound during my period?

Sometimes yes, if the doctor asks for it. For a routine checkup, it is better after your period ends.

Is a transvaginal ultrasound done if I have never had sex?

No. The scan is done through the belly with a full bladder, or another way the doctor suggests.
