Colostomy and ileostomy care

colostomy · ileostomy · ostomy bag · stoma care · changing an ostomy bag

A stoma is an opening of the bowel on the belly, through which stool passes into a special bag. You learn to change the bag and care for the skin yourself.

After bowel surgery, when the surgeon brought the bowel out to the belly, either for a time or permanently.

⏱ Duration: changing the bag usually takes 10 to 20 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Supplies. Keep a stock of bags, plates and skin products. They are chosen with a stoma nurse.
  • Size. The hole in the plate is cut to the size of the stoma. In the first weeks the stoma shrinks, so measure again.
  • Timing. It is easier to change in the morning before eating, when the bowel is less active.
  • Place. Lay out everything you need in the bathroom on a clean towel.

What to bring

  • A stock of bags and plates
  • Scissors and a size template
  • Wipes and a trash bag
  • Discharge papers and the nurse's contact

How it goes

  1. Wash your hands and get a new bag ready
  2. Gently remove the old bag from top to bottom, holding the skin
  3. Wash the skin around the stoma with warm water and pat dry
  4. Look at the stoma and the skin around it
  5. Cut the hole in the plate to the size of the stoma
  6. Stick the plate on from the bottom up and hold it with your hand for 1 to 2 minutes
  7. Put the used bag into a bag and throw it away

What you'll feel

  • The stoma itself does not hurt. It has no nerves, but it bleeds easily when touched
  • At first it feels strange and worrying. This is normal and gets easier

Afterwards

  • Empty the bag when it is one third to half full
  • Drink enough water, especially with an ileostomy
  • You can usually eat and wear almost anything. Ask your doctor about your own case
  • Do not lift heavy things. It protects against a hernia

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • The stoma turns dark, blue or black: see a doctor urgently or call your local emergency number
  • Severe belly pain, vomiting and no stool: call your local emergency number
  • Heavy bleeding from the stoma
  • Very watery stool many times, weakness, little urine: see a doctor

Common questions

Can I shower with a stoma?

Yes, with the bag on or off. Water will not get into the stoma.

Will there be a smell?

Modern bags do not let odor through. A smell happens only during a change or a leak.
