Driver's medical exam

driver's medical certificate · driving license medical · medical exam for driving · fitness to drive check

Several doctors check that you have no conditions that stop you driving safely. Then you get a medical certificate for your license.

Before getting a license, when renewing it, after a suspension, or for work as a driver.

⏱ Duration: usually 1 to 3 hours, if all doctors are in one place; the certificate is often given the same day

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Checklist. Ask the clinic which doctors you need: usually a GP, an eye doctor, a psychiatrist, and an addiction specialist, and more for some license categories.
  • Certificates. Sometimes the psychiatric and addiction certificates come from separate clinics. Check in advance.
  • The day before. Get a good night's sleep, and do not drink alcohol.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • Glasses or contacts, if you wear them
  • A photo, if the clinic asks
  • Your old license, if renewing

How it goes

  1. At the front desk, a form is filled in, and you get a list of rooms
  2. The eye doctor checks your vision, color vision, and visual field
  3. The GP checks your blood pressure and asks about your health
  4. The psychiatrist and addiction specialist ask questions
  5. Sometimes extra tests are done
  6. You get the certificate

What you'll feel

  • Nothing painful
  • There may be queues. Allow extra time

Afterwards

  • Hand in the certificate when applying for your license
  • The certificate is valid for a limited time. Check how long
  • If a doctor has doubts, you may be sent for tests

Common questions

Can I pass the exam with glasses?

Yes. If your vision is good enough with glasses, the certificate will say you may drive only with them.

How long is the certificate valid?

It depends on the country's rules. Check with the clinic or when you hand in your documents.
