acupuncture · dry needling · needle therapy · acupuncture for pain
The doctor places thin sterile needles at certain points on your body for a while.
Most often for chronic back or neck pain and headaches, as an add-on to your main treatment.
⏱ Duration: a session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, with needles in for 20 to 30 minutes; the doctor decides on the course

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Food. Do not come hungry, but not right after a big meal either.
- Clothes. Wear loose clothes so the needed areas can be uncovered.
- Needles. Needles should be single-use and sterile, opened in front of you.
What to bring
- Your referral or doctor's report, if you have one
- A list of your medicines
How it goes
- You lie down comfortably
- The doctor wipes your skin
- Thin needles are inserted, quickly and not deep
- You lie still with the needles in for 20 to 30 minutes
- The doctor removes the needles and throws them away
What you'll feel
- A quick light prick, often barely felt
- Sometimes heaviness, warmth, or a dull ache near a needle
- You may feel relaxed and sleepy
Afterwards
- Sit for a few minutes before leaving
- A small drop of blood or a bruise can happen and goes away on its own
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Severe weakness, fainting, or chest pain after a session: tell the doctor. With severe shortness of breath, call emergency services
Common questions
Does it hurt?
Usually not. The needles are very thin, and the prick is barely felt.
Can I get an infection from the needles?
No, if the needles are single-use and sterile. Ask for the pack to be opened in front of you.
