Vitamin IV drip
vitamin IV drip · IV vitamin therapy · vitamin infusion · IV drip for energy
A solution of vitamins and minerals is given through a drip into a vein.
A doctor orders it for a proven vitamin shortage that cannot be fixed with food and pills. For energy and beauty, the benefit of these drips is not proven.
⏱ Duration: usually 30 to 60 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Tests. It is good to have blood tests before the drip, so the doctor can see what you are really missing.
- Food. It is usually better not to come hungry.
What to bring
- Test results, if you have them
- A list of your medicines and supplements
How it goes
- The doctor asks about your health and checks the order
- The nurse puts an IV line in a vein
- The drip is connected
- You sit or lie down until the solution runs out
- The IV line is removed, and a cotton pad is pressed on
What you'll feel
- A cool feeling along the vein
- Sometimes warmth or a taste in the mouth
Afterwards
- You can go about your day right away
- A small bruise at the IV site goes away on its own
Contact a doctor straight away if
- A rash, a swollen face, trouble breathing, or sudden weakness: call emergency services
- The arm along the vein becomes red, swollen, and painful
Common questions
Is it better than vitamin pills?
Usually not, unless you have a condition where vitamins are poorly absorbed. Ask your doctor if you need a drip.
Can I get too many vitamins?
Yes, some vitamins build up in the body. That is why you should tell your doctor about all your supplements.
