Uroflowmetry

uroflowmetry · urine flow test · uroflow

You pass urine into a special toilet or funnel, and a device measures how fast and how much urine comes out.

For a weak stream, frequent urges, or a feeling that your bladder is not fully empty. Often for prostate problems.

⏱ Duration: usually 15 to 30 minutes, including waiting

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Full bladder. Come with a strong urge to go. Usually you drink half a liter to 1 liter of water 1 to 2 hours before the test.
  • Do not go. Do not use the toilet before the test. If it is very hard to hold, tell the staff.
  • Extra time. Come a little early. If the urge is still weak, you can wait at the clinic and drink some water.

What to bring

  • Your referral
  • A bottle of water
  • Your bladder diary, if your doctor asked you to keep one

How it goes

  1. When you have a strong urge, you are taken to a private room
  2. You are left alone
  3. You pass urine into the special toilet or funnel, the way you usually do
  4. The device records the speed and volume by itself
  5. Often, an ultrasound then checks how much urine is left in your bladder

What you'll feel

  • Nothing unpleasant. It is a normal trip to the toilet
  • It may feel awkward, but you will be alone

Afterwards

  • You can go back to your usual day right away
  • The result is usually ready right away. The urologist explains it
  • Sometimes the test is repeated if there was too little urine

Common questions

How much water should I drink before uroflowmetry?

Usually half a liter to 1 liter over 1 to 2 hours. The main thing is to come with a strong urge and not use the toilet before the test.

Why is the test sometimes repeated?

If there was too little urine or you were nervous, the result may be inaccurate. Then it is repeated.
