Physiotherapy (magnet, electrophoresis, ultrasound)
physical therapy treatments · magnetic therapy · electrotherapy · physio
Treatment with physical methods: a magnetic field, a weak electric current, or ultrasound. The device is placed against the skin, and the session is calm.
In addition to your main treatment: for joint and back pain, after injuries and surgery, and for some kinds of inflammation.
⏱ Duration: one session usually takes 10 to 20 minutes; a course is usually 7 to 10 sessions

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Skin. Clean, with no cream or ointment where the treatment will be.
- Clothes. Comfortable, so you can easily uncover the area.
- Food. Do not come hungry, or right after a big meal. About an hour or an hour and a half after eating is best.
- Jewelry. Take off metal jewelry near the treatment area.
What to bring
- Your referral with the prescribed treatments
- Medicine for electrophoresis, if your clinic asked
- A towel or a sheet, if your clinic asks
How it goes
- You lie down or sit, and uncover the area
- For magnetic therapy, a device is placed on your body, or your arm or leg is placed inside it
- For electrophoresis, damp pads with medicine and electrodes are placed on the skin
- For ultrasound, gel is put on the skin and a probe is moved over it
- The device is turned on for the set time. Lie calmly
- At the end, everything is removed and your skin is wiped
What you'll feel
- Magnet: usually nothing, sometimes slight warmth
- Electrophoresis: tingling or prickling under the pads
- Ultrasound: nothing, or slight warmth
- If it burns or hurts, tell the nurse right away
Afterwards
- Sit for 10 to 15 minutes before going out, especially in winter
- Slight redness of the skin after electrophoresis passes in a couple of hours
- The effect often does not show right away, but after a few sessions
- Do not skip sessions in your course without a reason
Common questions

It can ease pain and speed up recovery, but it does not replace your main treatment. The effect differs between people and methods.
Who should not have these treatments?
Usually people with a pacemaker, pregnancy, cancer, a fever, or bleeding. The doctor checks this before prescribing.
