Photodynamic therapy for the skin

photodynamic therapy · skin PDT · light treatment · PDT · photodynamic treatment

A special cream is applied to your skin that makes the changed cells sensitive to light. Then the area is lit with a lamp, and the changed cells are destroyed.

For some precancerous skin changes, surface skin tumors, and sometimes acne - as decided by the doctor.

⏱ Duration: the cream works for usually 1 to 3 hours, the lighting takes 10 to 20 minutes; healing takes 1 to 2 weeks

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Skin. Do not sunbathe for a few days before the procedure. Do not use scrubs or irritating products.
  • Trip home. After the procedure your skin must be hidden from light - bring a hat, scarf and dark glasses.
  • Time. With the waiting, the procedure takes several hours - ask the clinic.

What to bring

  • A hat, scarf and dark glasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A list of your medicines
  • Something to read while you wait

How it goes

  1. Your skin is cleaned and sometimes crusts are lightly removed
  2. The special cream is applied
  3. You wait with a dressing on while the cream soaks in
  4. The cream is washed off and your eyes are covered with protective goggles
  5. The area is lit with a lamp for several minutes
  6. The skin is cooled and a soothing product is applied

What you'll feel

  • During lighting - burning and tingling, which can be strong
  • The doctor can pause and cool your skin with air

Afterwards

  • For usually 1 to 2 days keep your skin protected from light, even from a bright lamp
  • Redness, swelling and crusts usually go away in 1 to 2 weeks
  • Do not pick off the crusts
  • After that use sunscreen every day

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Blisters, pus, severe pain or fever - see a doctor
  • Severe swelling around the eyes - see a doctor
