keloid treatment · keloid · raised scar treatment · steroid injection into a scar
A keloid is a firm, raised scar that grows beyond the edge of the wound. It is made softer and flatter with injections, pressure dressings, and other methods.
When a scar grows, itches, hurts, or bothers you.

How to prepare
- Photos. Take a photo of the scar before treatment. This makes it easier to judge the result.
- Clothing. Clothes that make the scar easy to uncover.
What to bring
- Your ID
- Reports from past scar treatment
How it goes
- The doctor examines the scar and chooses a method
- The skin is cleaned with antiseptic
- Often medicine is injected into the scar with a thin needle
- Sometimes silicone patches or pressure dressings are prescribed
- The next visit is booked, usually after a few weeks
What you'll feel
- Injections into the scar can be felt, because the tissue is firm
- After the injection, the spot may ache for a day or two
- Results come gradually
Afterwards
- Use the patches or dressings as your doctor said
- Protect the scar from the sun
- Come for repeat treatments on schedule
Contact a doctor straight away if
- The scar becomes inflamed, has pus, or is surrounded by strong redness
Common questions
Can a keloid just be cut out?
Without extra treatment, it often grows back, sometimes bigger. That is why the doctor combines methods.
How many treatments are needed?
