Newborn hearing screening

newborn hearing screening · newborn hearing test · otoacoustic emissions · OAE test

A quick hearing test for your baby. A soft tip goes into the ear, the device plays quiet sounds and records the ear's response.

For all newborns, usually in the maternity ward in the first days or within the first month.

⏱ Duration: usually 5 to 10 minutes; the result is ready right away

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Timing. Best when your baby is asleep or calm. It helps to feed your baby before the test.
  • Quiet. The test is done in a quiet place. Noise and crying affect the result.

What to bring

  • Your baby's documents or hospital discharge papers
  • A diaper and feeding things

How it goes

  1. You hold your baby, or they are placed in a cot
  2. A small soft tip is placed in the ear
  3. The device plays quiet clicks and records the response
  4. The same is done for the other ear
  5. The device shows right away: pass, or a repeat test is needed

What you'll feel

  • It does not hurt. Many babies sleep through it
  • Your baby may fuss a little if they wake up

Afterwards

  • You get the result right away
  • A refer result does not mean your baby cannot hear. Fluid or wax in the ear often gets in the way
  • If your baby does not pass, the test is repeated in a few weeks, or you are referred to a hearing specialist

Common questions

My baby did not pass. Are they deaf?

Not necessarily. Often it is fluid after birth or noise. The test will be repeated, with a hearing specialist if needed.

Why test hearing so early?

The earlier hearing loss is found, the better speech develops with support.

Can it be done if my baby is crying?

Better to wait until they calm down. Crying disturbs the device.
