MR cholangiography (MRCP)
MRCP · MR cholangiography · MRI of the bile ducts · MRI of the biliary tract
An MRI of the belly that shows the bile ducts, gallbladder and the pancreatic duct. No needle and no radiation.
When gallstones in the bile ducts are suspected, for jaundice, for pain under the right ribs and before surgery.
⏱ Duration: usually 20 to 40 minutes, the report in 1 to 3 days

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Fasting. Usually no food or drink for 4 to 6 hours, so the gallbladder is full. Ask the clinic.
- Metal. Take off jewelry, watch and belt. Leave cards and phone in the locker.
- Medicines. Your usual medicines can usually be taken with a small sip of water. Ask your doctor.
What to bring
- Your referral
- Earlier ultrasounds, CTs and MRIs
- Blood test results, if you had them
- Your ID
How it goes
- You change clothes and remove all metal
- You lie on your back on the scanner table
- A coil - a light pad - is placed on your belly
- The table slides into the scanner and you are given earphones
- You are often asked to hold your breath on command
- Sometimes contrast is given into a vein
What you'll feel
- It does not hurt
- The scanner knocks loudly - this is normal
- Breath holds are tiring, but short
Afterwards
- You can eat and go about your day right away
- The report is usually ready in 1 to 3 days
- Discuss the result with your doctor
Common questions
Is contrast needed?
Often the ducts can be seen without it. The doctor decides.
Why can't I eat?
So the gallbladder and ducts are full, and the bowel gets in the way less.
