IUD removal

IUD removal · coil removal · taking out an IUD

A gynecologist takes the IUD out of the womb by pulling its strings. It is usually quick and done right in the exam room.

When the IUD has expired, when you plan a pregnancy, if you have side effects, or simply if you want it out.

⏱ Duration: the procedure itself takes 1 to 5 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Protection. If you do not want to get pregnant and want a new IUD or another method, talk with your doctor ahead of time. You are usually advised to use protection for 7 days before removal.
  • Timing. The IUD is often removed during your period, but other days are possible too. Check with your clinic.
  • Before your visit. Take a shower and bring a pad.

What to bring

  • Your referral, if you have one
  • A pad
  • Details about your IUD: when it was put in and what type, if you know

How it goes

  1. You lie on the gynecology chair
  2. The doctor puts in a speculum, a tool that gently opens the vagina
  3. The doctor finds the IUD strings
  4. With a special instrument, the doctor gently pulls the strings, and the IUD comes out
  5. The doctor checks that the IUD is whole

What you'll feel

  • A short pulling pain, like period cramps
  • It usually passes in a few minutes

Afterwards

  • Light bloody spotting for 1 to 2 days is normal
  • You can get pregnant as soon as this cycle
  • If you are getting a new IUD, it is often put in at the same visit
  • If the strings cannot be seen, the doctor may order an ultrasound

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Heavy bleeding: more than one pad an hour
  • A fever above 38 degrees, or severe pain low in the belly

Common questions

Does IUD removal hurt?

It is usually unpleasant but quick: a few seconds of pulling pain.

When can I get pregnant after IUD removal?

Usually right away, in your next cycle. If you do not want a pregnancy, think about protection ahead of time.
