Fallopian tube X-ray (HSG)

HSG · hysterosalpingography · fallopian tube test · tubal patency test

Contrast dye is passed through the cervix, and X-rays are taken. They show the shape of the uterus and whether the tubes are open.

For trouble getting pregnant, before infertility treatment, or after surgery on the tubes.

⏱ Duration: the procedure itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes; results often right after the images

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Cycle day. Usually in the first half of the cycle: after your period ends and before ovulation, often day 6 to 12. Ask your doctor.
  • Tests. Usually a vaginal swab for infections is needed, sometimes a blood test. The clinic will give you the list.
  • Pregnancy. Pregnancy is ruled out before the procedure. Sometimes you are asked to take a test, or not to try to conceive in this cycle before the HSG.
  • Pain relief. Ask your doctor if you can take a painkiller 30 to 60 minutes before.

What to bring

  • Your referral
  • Recent swab and test results
  • A sanitary pad
  • Someone with you, if you feel nervous

How it goes

  1. You lie on the table, as for a gynecological exam
  2. The doctor inserts a speculum and cleans the cervix
  3. A thin tube is placed in the cervix
  4. Contrast is slowly passed through it
  5. Several X-rays are taken
  6. The tube and speculum are removed

What you'll feel

  • Cramps low in the belly, like period pain, while the contrast goes in
  • The feelings usually pass in a few minutes or hours

Afterwards

  • You may have spotting for a few days. Use a pad
  • Usually no sex, swimming pools, or baths for 1 to 2 days. Ask your doctor
  • Go over the results with your gynecologist or fertility doctor

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • A fever over 38°C (100.4°F), severe pain low in the belly, or bad-smelling discharge: call your doctor
  • Heavy bleeding or fainting: call emergency services

Common questions

Does it hurt a lot?

Usually it feels like period cramps. Tell the doctor if it hurts a lot. They can pause.

Can I get pregnant in the same cycle after an HSG?

Ask your doctor. Often trying is allowed in the same cycle, but clinics have different rules.
