Skin cyst removal
sebaceous cyst removal · epidermoid cyst removal · skin cyst removal · lump under the skin
A skin cyst is a small sac under the skin filled with thick material. The surgeon removes it together with its wall, using local numbing.
When the cyst grows, gets in the way, becomes inflamed, or is visible on the face or neck.
⏱ Duration: the procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes; stitches usually come out after 7 to 10 days

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Do not touch. Do not squeeze the cyst yourself. It can become inflamed.
- Hair. If the cyst is on your head, wash your hair the day before.
- Food. Usually no special prep. You can eat.
What to bring
- Your ID
- Ultrasound results, if you had one
How it goes
- The surgeon examines the lump
- The skin is cleaned with antiseptic
- A numbing injection is given
- A small cut is made, and the cyst is removed with its wall
- Stitches and a bandage are put on
- The removed tissue is sometimes sent for testing
What you'll feel
- The numbing injection stings for a few seconds
- During removal: pressure and pulling, but no pain
- Afterward, the spot aches for 1 to 2 days
Afterwards
- Keep the bandage dry, as the surgeon says
- Come for dressing changes and stitch removal on the set days
- Tissue test results usually come in 1 to 2 weeks
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Severe pain, swelling, or pus from the wound
- A fever over 38°C (100.4°F)
- Blood soaks through the bandage and does not stop
Common questions
Can the cyst come back?
If the whole wall was removed, usually not. That is why it is removed when there is no strong inflammation.
Why is it not removed right away if inflamed?
With inflammation, the inflammation is treated first, or the abscess is drained. The cyst itself is removed later.
