Rehab for a child with cerebral palsy

cerebral palsy rehab · cerebral palsy treatment for children · physical therapy for cerebral palsy · rehabilitation for a child with cerebral palsy

These are regular sessions that help a child move, sit, walk, and care for themselves better. Doctors, instructors, and parents all take part.

For children with cerebral palsy, from an early age and throughout growth.

⏱ Duration: a session usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and courses are repeated many times

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Goals. Think about what matters most to your child now: sitting, walking, holding a spoon. Tell the specialist.
  • Clothing. Comfortable clothes in which movements can be seen. Bring braces and shoes.
  • Routine. Plan the session for when your child is rested and not hungry.

What to bring

  • Discharge papers and doctors' reports
  • Braces and shoes
  • Water and a snack
  • A favorite toy

How it goes

  1. The specialist meets your child and watches how they move
  2. Together with you, goals are set for the coming months
  3. Exercises are done through play
  4. Braces, supports, and mobility aids are chosen
  5. You are shown what to do with your child at home
  6. Progress is checked regularly

What you'll feel

  • Your child may get tired or fussy, which is normal
  • Muscle stretching can be unpleasant, and the specialist adjusts the force
  • Progress comes gradually, sometimes slowly

Afterwards

  • Practice at home every day, which is just as important as the sessions at the center
  • Wear braces on the schedule you were given
  • Praise your child for every new skill

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • A seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, or your child does not come round: call emergency services
  • Sudden joint pain, or your child stopped putting weight on a leg
  • Redness or sores from braces

Common questions

Can cerebral palsy be cured?

It does not go away completely. But sessions help a child become more independent.

How long do we need to practice?

Regularly and for a long time, for years. A little every day is better than a lot rarely.
