Cast removal

cast removal · removing a cast · taking off a cast

The cast is cut with a special saw or scissors and removed. Then the doctor checks how the bone has healed.

When the time your doctor set is over, or the cast needs to be replaced.

⏱ Duration: usually 10 to 20 minutes; a follow-up X-ray and exam the same day

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Prep. Usually none.
  • Clothing. Bring loose clothes and shoes. The arm or leg may be a little swollen.

What to bring

  • Your documents and past X-rays
  • Loose clothes and comfortable shoes
  • Skin cream

How it goes

  1. Usually a follow-up X-ray is done first
  2. The cast is cut with a saw that vibrates, rather than spins
  3. The cast is opened and removed
  4. The padding and sleeve are cut with scissors
  5. The doctor checks your skin and movement
  6. The doctor explains what you can and cannot do next

What you'll feel

  • Noise, vibration, and warmth from the saw. The saw does not cut skin
  • The arm or leg feels light and weak
  • The joint is stiff, and moving is hard

Afterwards

  • The skin is dry and flaky. Wash it with warm water and use cream
  • Swelling may last a few days
  • Muscles recover gradually. Do exercises as your doctor says
  • Increase activity little by little

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Strong swelling, pain, and redness in the calf: see a doctor right away
  • Sudden pain or a change in shape after removal

Common questions

Will the saw cut me?

No. It vibrates and cuts only the hard cast, not soft skin. It may feel warm.

Why is my arm so weak?

The muscles got weaker without movement. Strength returns over a few weeks of exercise.
