Adult vaccinations: what and when

adult vaccines · which vaccines adults need · adult vaccination schedule · adult booster shots

Adults need vaccines too: some are repeated, others are given by age or health. The doctor will tell you what you need.

For all adults, especially with chronic illness, after age 50 to 60, during pregnancy and before travel.

⏱ Duration: the consultation usually takes 15 to 20 minutes; each shot takes a few minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Records. Find your vaccination record or discharge papers. If you have none, the doctor will tell you what to do.
  • List. Adults are usually advised diphtheria and tetanus every 10 years and flu every year. The rest depends on age and health.
  • Questions. Write down what you want to ask.

What to bring

  • Your ID
  • Your vaccination record or papers
  • A list of your illnesses and medicines

How it goes

  1. You tell the doctor which vaccines you have had
  2. The doctor asks about your health, age and work
  3. Makes a list of the vaccines you need
  4. Many vaccines can be given on the same day
  5. Each vaccine is recorded in your documents
  6. You get the dates of the next vaccines

What you'll feel

  • The consultation itself does not hurt
  • After a shot your arm may ache, with some weakness

Afterwards

  • Keep all your vaccination records
  • Set reminders for the repeat dates
  • Before travel, see the doctor early, usually 1 to 2 months ahead

Common questions

The doctor will advise. Sometimes the vaccine is given again, or a blood test checks your protection.

Which vaccines are needed after 60?

Often flu, pneumococcal and shingles vaccines are advised. Check the list with your doctor.
