Stool culture for Salmonella and Shigella

stool culture · bacterial stool test · Salmonella test · enteric pathogens test · stool test for a work health certificate

This is a stool test. The lab grows germs from it to find dangerous gut bacteria and choose a medicine that works.

For diarrhea with fever, blood, or mucus. It is also required for the work health record of kitchen and childcare staff.

⏱ Duration: collection takes a few minutes; results usually come in 3 to 5 days

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Container. Get a sterile container from a pharmacy or the lab. For stool, choose one with a small spoon in the lid.
  • Antibiotics. It is better to do the test before starting antibiotics. If you already take them, do not stop on your own. Tell your doctor.
  • Collection. Collect stool from a clean surface, not from the toilet. Laxatives and suppositories are usually not used before collection. Ask your doctor.
  • Delivery. Fresh stool must get to the lab quickly, usually within a couple of hours. The lab will tell you the exact time.

What to bring

  • The stool container
  • Your referral
  • Your ID

How it goes

  1. Line the toilet or potty with clean plastic wrap or paper
  2. Use the spoon in the lid to take a bit of stool, ideally with mucus if there is any
  3. Put it in the container and close it tightly
  4. Label the container
  5. Wash your hands and take it to the lab right away

What you'll feel

  • Nothing unpleasant. It is a normal stool sample
  • The main thing is not to delay getting it to the lab

Afterwards

  • With diarrhea, drink often, in small sips
  • If a germ is found, the lab will show which medicines work against it
  • Your doctor will prescribe treatment

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Blood in the stool, high fever, or severe belly pain: see a doctor the same day
  • Signs of dehydration, like a dry mouth, little urine, or severe weakness: see a doctor urgently
  • Fainting or confusion: call emergency services

Common questions

Why do results take so long?

The germs first have to grow in the lab. That takes several days.

Can I collect stool in the evening and bring it in the morning?

Fresh stool is usually needed. If there is no other way, ask the lab how to store it.
