Stool test (coprogram)

stool test · stool sample · stool analysis

A small amount of stool is looked at under a microscope. It shows how food is digested and whether there is inflammation.

For belly pain, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, or if digestive problems are suspected.

⏱ Duration: collecting at home takes a few minutes; results usually take 1 to 3 days

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Container. Buy a sterile container with a small spoon at a pharmacy, or get one from the lab.
  • Medicines. Laxatives, suppositories, and enemas are usually not used for 2 to 3 days before the test. If you need them, tell your doctor and they will decide.
  • Food. Usually eat as normal. Sometimes the doctor gives you a special diet for a few days. Follow it.
  • For women. It is better to put off the test during your period.

What to bring

  • The container with your stool
  • Your referral

How it goes

  1. First pass urine, so it does not mix with the stool
  2. Have a bowel movement into a clean, dry bedpan or onto clean plastic wrap, not from the toilet
  3. With the spoon in the lid, take bits from different spots, about the size of a walnut
  4. Close the container tightly and label it
  5. Take it to the lab the same day

What you'll feel

  • Nothing. The test is painless

Afterwards

  • If you cannot take it right away, the container is usually kept in the fridge, not the freezer, for a few hours. Check how long with the lab
  • Your doctor will explain the result

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Black, tar-like stool or a lot of blood in your stool: see a doctor right away or call emergency services
  • Severe belly pain with fever or vomiting: see a doctor the same day

Common questions

Can I collect the stool the evening before?

A morning sample is better. If you only have an evening one, keep it in the fridge and bring it in the morning. Check the time limit with the lab.

How much stool is needed?

Not much. About a third of the container, the size of a walnut.
