Semen analysis
semen analysis · sperm test · sperm count test
A test of semen under a microscope. It checks the number of sperm, how well they move, and their shape.
When a couple cannot conceive, before IVF, for diseases of the male reproductive organs, and after surgery.
⏱ Duration: collecting the sample usually takes 10 to 20 minutes

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Abstinence. Usually 2 to 7 days without sex or ejaculation. Your clinic will tell you the exact time.
- A few days before. No alcohol, sauna, steam bath, or hot baths. It is best not to overheat.
- Medicines. Do not stop medicines on your own. Tell your doctor what you take, and they will decide.
- Where to give the sample. It is best at the clinic, in a private room. If at home, you need a sterile container from the lab.
What to bring

How it goes
- You are given a sterile container and shown to a private room

- The semen is collected by masturbation straight into the container
- The whole sample is needed, especially the first part
- Close the container and hand it to the staff
What you'll feel
- Nothing painful. Feeling awkward is normal. The staff are used to this
Afterwards
- The result usually comes in 1 to 2 days
- One test can be worse by chance. The doctor often asks you to repeat it in 2 to 4 weeks
- A urologist or andrologist explains the result
Common questions
Can I collect semen in a condom?
Not a regular condom. It contains substances that harm sperm. Lubricant is also not allowed.
Can I give the sample at home?
Sometimes yes. Bring the container to the lab within about an hour, keeping it warm, close to your body. Check with your clinic.
How many days should I abstain before the test?
Usually 2 to 7 days. Too short or too long a time distorts the result.
