Treating head lice in a child

lice · head lice · nits · lice in a child · how to get rid of lice

Lice are tiny insects in the hair. They are not dangerous, but they cause itching and spread easily to others. They are removed with a special product and combing.

When your child's head itches and you can see lice or nits - white dots near the roots.

⏱ Duration: treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes; a repeat is usually done after 7 to 10 days

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Product. Choose the product by your child's age. Ask the pediatrician or pharmacist.
  • Comb. You need a fine-toothed comb to remove nits.
  • Family. Check everyone's hair at home. Only treat those who have lice.
  • Nursery and school. Tell the teacher so other children can be checked.

What to bring

  • The lice product
  • A fine-toothed comb
  • A towel and a light-colored cloth for the shoulders
  • Good light

How it goes

  1. Apply the product to the hair, following the instructions exactly
  2. Leave it on for as many minutes as it says
  3. Rinse with shampoo or water, as the instructions say
  4. Comb the hair with the fine comb, strand by strand, from the roots
  5. Wipe the comb with a tissue after each strand
  6. Repeat after 7 to 10 days, if the instructions say so
  7. Wash bedding and hats in hot water

What you'll feel

  • It is boring for a child to sit still for long - put on a cartoon
  • Sometimes mild stinging of the skin from the product

Afterwards

  • For a few days check the head with the comb
  • Explain to your child not to swap combs and hats
  • There is usually no need to shave the head

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • Rash, swelling or severe skin irritation after the product - rinse it off and see a doctor
  • Sores on the head with pus, or fever - see a doctor
