The doctor injects a gel under the skin, usually made of hyaluronic acid. It fills wrinkles or adds volume, for example to the lips or cheeks.
To soften deep wrinkles and smile lines, or to shape the lips, cheeks, or chin.
⏱ Duration: the procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes; the effect is seen right away and usually lasts from 6 months to a year or longer

How to prepare
- Before the procedure. If you can, avoid alcohol for a few days before. Ask your doctor about your medicines.
- Plans. Swelling and bruises can happen. Do not plan important events for the next few days.
- Face. Come without makeup.

How it goes
- The doctor discusses the result you want
- The skin is cleaned, and a numbing cream is often applied
- The gel is injected with a thin needle or a flexible cannula
- The doctor spreads the gel with a gentle massage
- Something cold is applied, and you are told about aftercare
What you'll feel
- You can feel the injections, but the numbing cream and the numbing medicine in the gel help
- Afterward, swelling, and sometimes bruises and firm spots, for a few days
Afterwards
- Do not touch or massage the area, unless your doctor says so
- For a few days, no saunas, steam rooms, tanning beds, or sports
- Swelling usually goes down in a few days to two weeks
- A follow-up visit, if your doctor books one
Contact a doctor straight away if
- The skin at the injection site turns white, bluish, or blotchy, with severe pain: see a doctor urgently
- Changes in vision after a facial injection: call emergency services
- Swelling that keeps getting worse, redness, or a fever
Common questions
Can a filler be removed if I do not like it?
A hyaluronic acid gel can usually be dissolved with a special medicine. Your doctor decides.
Why are my lips so big after the procedure?
In the first days it is swelling. The final shape usually shows after 1 to 2 weeks.
