Epidural injection for back pain

epidural injection · epidural steroid injection · spinal block · spine injection for pain · epidural block

The doctor injects an anti-inflammatory medicine next to a nerve in the spine. This reduces back and leg pain.

For back pain that spreads into the leg or arm, for example with a slipped disc, when pills and exercise help little.

⏱ Duration: the procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, with about 30 to 60 minutes of observation afterward

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Images. Bring your spine MRI or CT, which the doctor uses to choose the injection site.
  • Food. Usually you can have a light breakfast. If sedation is planned, check with the clinic.
  • Ride. It is better to have someone take you home, since your leg may be temporarily numb.

  • An ID
  • A list of your medicines

How it goes

  1. You lie on your stomach or sit
  2. The skin on your back is cleaned and numbed
  3. Under X-ray or ultrasound, the doctor inserts a thin needle

  5. The medicine is injected, the needle is removed, and a plaster is put on

  • The effect usually comes in a few days
  • Sometimes the pain is even a little worse in the first days
