Capsule endoscopy
pill camera · camera capsule · video capsule test
You swallow a capsule the size of a large pill. Inside is a camera that takes pictures of your bowel as the capsule passes through it.
To look at the small bowel, which a regular gastroscopy and colonoscopy cannot reach. For example, for hidden bleeding or anemia with no clear cause.
⏱ Duration: swallowing the capsule takes a minute; recording lasts about 8 to 12 hours

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- The day before. Usually light food for 24 hours, and liquids during the day. No vegetables with skins, seeds, or berries with seeds.
- Cleansing. Often you are given a bowel cleansing solution, like before a colonoscopy. Drink it as your clinic instructs.
- Fasting. Usually no food for 10 to 12 hours before the test. Your clinic will give you the exact time.
- Clothes. Loose cotton clothes. Sensors will be stuck on your belly, or a belt with a recorder will be put on.

- A list of your medicines
How it goes
- Sensors are stuck on your belly, or a belt is put on
- A small recorder is attached to the belt
- You swallow the capsule with water
- You can go home or stay at the clinic, depending on the clinic's rules
- Clear water is usually allowed after 2 hours, and light food after 4 hours

What you'll feel
- Swallowing the capsule is like a large pill
- You will not feel it inside
Afterwards
- The capsule leaves on its own with your stool, usually in 1 to 3 days. You do not need to catch it. It is single-use
- Until the capsule has passed, you cannot have an MRI
- Stay away from strong magnets and radio transmitters while recording
- Results usually come in a few days. The doctor looks through thousands of images
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Severe belly pain, bloating, or vomiting
- No gas or stool, especially if the capsule has not passed yet
Common questions
What do I do with the capsule after it comes out?
Nothing. It is single-use, and you do not need to catch it. If you are not sure it has passed, tell your doctor.
Can the capsule get stuck?
Rarely. It is more likely if the bowel is narrowed. That is why you should tell the doctor about bowel surgery and bowel disease beforehand.
Does the capsule replace a colonoscopy?
Usually not. The capsule mostly looks at the small bowel and cannot take a tissue sample.
