NT-proBNP (heart strain test)
NT-proBNP · BNP test · natriuretic peptide · heart failure blood test
This is a blood test from a vein. It shows whether your heart is under strain.
For shortness of breath, swollen legs, getting tired fast, or to check heart failure treatment.
⏱ Duration: the blood draw takes a few minutes; results usually come the same or the next day

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Prep. Nothing special. Best in the morning, before a big breakfast. Check with the lab.
- Before the draw. No hard exercise. Sit quietly for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Medicines. Do not stop them on your own. Tell your doctor what you take. They will decide if anything should change.
What to bring
- Your test request form
- Your ID
- Past NT-proBNP results and ECGs, if you have them
How it goes
- You sit down and rest your arm on the armrest
- A band is tightened above your elbow
- The skin is wiped with antiseptic
- A quick prick, and blood fills a tube
- The needle comes out, and a cotton pad is pressed on the spot
What you'll feel
- A quick prick, like a pinch
- Sometimes slight dizziness. Tell the nurse
Afterwards
- Press the cotton pad for 3 to 5 minutes and keep your arm straight
- You can eat right away and go back to your usual day
- Results usually come in 1 day. The lab will tell you when
- Your doctor compares the result with past ones. The trend matters
Contact a doctor straight away if
- Shortness of breath suddenly gets worse, you cannot lie flat, or you have chest pain: call emergency services
- Swelling and weight go up fast over a few days: see a doctor soon
Common questions
Does a high NT-proBNP mean heart failure?
Not necessarily. It depends on age, kidneys, and other things. Your doctor draws the conclusions.
