Retainer after braces
retainer · orthodontic retainer · wire behind the teeth · clear retainer after braces
A retainer holds your teeth in place after braces. It can be fixed, a thin wire behind the teeth, or a removable clear tray.
After braces or aligners are removed, so the teeth do not move back to their old position.
⏱ Duration: placement usually takes 20 to 40 minutes; you usually wear it for years, and the orthodontist will tell you how long

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Teeth. Brush your teeth before the visit.
- Timing. If your braces are being removed, the retainer is often placed the same day.
What to bring
- Your ID
- The tray case, if you already have one
How it goes
- Your teeth are cleaned and dried
- For a fixed retainer, the wire is bonded to the inside of the teeth
- For a removable one, an impression is taken and the tray is given later
- The doctor checks your bite
- Shows you how to care for it and how to wear the tray
What you'll feel
- For the first days you can feel the wire with your tongue
- The tray feels tight at first. This passes quickly
Afterwards
- Wear the tray as many hours as the doctor said, usually at night
- Clean around the wire with a small brush or floss
- Keep the tray in its case
- Come to check-ups at the set time
Contact a doctor straight away if
- The wire has come off or broken: book a visit with the doctor, do not wait
- The tray cracked or no longer fits
