Removable orthodontic plate for a child

orthodontic plate · removable braces for kids · teeth aligner plate · bite plate

The plate is a removable plastic device with small wires. It slowly moves the teeth and helps the jaw grow correctly.

For children with a wrong bite, crowded teeth or a narrow jaw, while the bones are still growing.

⏱ Duration: taking impressions usually takes 15 to 20 minutes; the plate is usually worn from several months to 1 to 2 years

Be sure to tell your doctor

How to prepare

  • Mood. Explain to your child why the plate is needed. Your child will have to wear it every day.
  • Teeth. Brush your child's teeth before the visit.

What to bring

  • Your child's document
  • The case, if you already have one
  • X-rays, if done

How it goes

  1. The doctor takes impressions or scans the teeth
  2. The plate is made from the impression
  3. At the next visit it is tried on and adjusted
  4. The doctor shows your child and you how to put it in and take it out
  5. You are told how often to turn the screw and when to come for checks

What you'll feel

  • In the first days it presses and makes talking hard
  • Extra saliva in the first days. It passes
  • Teeth may ache after the screw is turned

Afterwards

  • Wear it for as many hours a day as the doctor said
  • Take it out to eat if the doctor said so
  • Brush the plate every day
  • Keep it in its case. Do not wrap it in a napkin
  • Come to check-ups at the set time

Contact a doctor straight away if

  • The plate has rubbed the gum into a sore
  • The plate broke or no longer fits: see the doctor

Common questions

What if my child does not want to wear it?

The plate does not work if it is not worn. Talk to the doctor, who can explain to your child and suggest how to help.

Can my child eat with it in?

Usually the plate is taken out for meals. Check with the doctor.
