Getting ready for laparoscopy
preparing for laparoscopic surgery · before keyhole surgery · laparoscopy preparation · pre-op checklist
How to get ready for surgery through small cuts in the belly: tests, food, medicines, and what to pack.
When you are scheduled for laparoscopy, for example gallbladder removal, hernia repair, or gynecological surgery.
⏱ Duration: preparation usually takes from a few days to 2 weeks

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Tests. Blood and urine tests, an ECG, a chest X-ray, and sometimes a GP checkup. Check the list and how long results stay valid with the clinic.
- Medicines. Do not stop them on your own. Your doctor will say which to take on the day and which to pause.
- Food and drink. Usually no food from the night before and no drinks for a few hours. The clinic will tell you the exact time.
- Skin. Shower the day before. You do not need to shave your belly unless the clinic asks.
- Smoking. Best not to smoke for at least a few days before. Breathing after anesthesia will be easier.

Common questions
Why can't I eat before surgery?
So stomach contents do not get into the lungs during anesthesia. This matters for safety.
Can I take my pills in the morning?
Only the ones your doctor allowed, with a sip of water. Ask in advance.
