Dry eye testing
dry eye test · dry eye syndrome · Schirmer test · tear film test
The doctor checks how many tears your eyes make and how long they stay on the surface of the eye.
When your eyes feel dry, burn, turn red, feel gritty, or get tired from screens.
⏱ Duration: usually 15 to 30 minutes; the doctor tells you the result right away

Be sure to tell your doctor
How to prepare
- Drops. Ask the clinic whether to skip lubricating drops before the exam.
- Lenses and makeup. Best to come without contacts and without eye makeup.
What to bring
- A list of your eye drops and medicines
- Your glasses
- Your ID
How it goes
- The doctor asks about your symptoms
- Your eyes are examined under a microscope
- A dye may be put in to see how fast the tear film breaks up
- Sometimes a paper strip is placed under the lower lid for 5 minutes
- The strip shows how many tears you make
What you'll feel
- The strip under the lid tickles a little, and you want to blink
- The dye may turn your tears yellow for a while
Afterwards
- Your eyes may water for a few minutes
- The doctor will suggest care and eye drops
